Bangkok, know to the Thais as "Krungthep or the City of Angels" was established in 1782 by King Rama I as a capital of Thailand. Over the past two centuries, it has developed into a great metropolis with a population of over 8 million. Like other modern cities in the world, Bangkok boats lots of massive building, numerous luxurious hotels, shopping centers, and a modern international airport. But Bangkok has also retained its traditional charm. It is a mixture of East and West, the ancient and the modern. Its surface has taken on the look of the present time, while understand the old ways are much alive in Thais' everyday life. So despite its modernization, Bangkok is still best suited for a glimpse of the traditional arts, architecture, religious, and other aspects of the culture of the Thai people.

Thailand' s capital edges the Cho Phraya, the celebrated "River of Kings". First impressions are of a modern metropolis, but closer inspection reveals a magical eastern city concealed highlight and shopping centers. A river cruise is probably the most pleasant way to discover Bangkok's major charms, particularly when you pass the magnificent Grand Palace and Emerald Buddha Chapel, Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) and the exquisite royal barges with their exotic figureheads.The river pulsates with activity,with craft trans porting people and produce in each and every direction.

Bangkok's museums are eminently worth visiting. They include Aphisek Dusit Palace which houses exquisite handicrafts from the Royal Vacational Projects; Vimanmek Mansion Museum, the world's largest golden teak building; the sprawling the National Museum; and Jim Thompson's Thai House, former home of the the man who revitalized the thai silk industry, and which houses an impressive collection of regional objects art. To witness local sports, try either the Ratchadamnoen or Lumphini boxing stadiums for a spectacular evening of Muay Thai, or Thai kickboxing.

Ayutthaya, the ancient Siamese capital from December, 1350 unit 1767, lies some 70 kilometres north of Bangkok, Impressive temple and palace ruins attest to the former capital's glory.30 minutes south of Ayutthaya, the riverine and former summer palace of Bang Pa-In comprises a fascinating blend of Italian, Chinese, Victorian Gothic andThai architectural styles. The riverside Bangsai Folf Arts & Crafts Centre, under the patronage of H.M. the Queen, is a further 20 kilometres to the south. A recently opened bird park and freshwater fish aquarium number among majorattractions.

A day-trip to the west will bring you to the "River Kwai Bridge" of Second World War notoriety, and the scenic hills and rivers Kanchanaburi. River fafting is favourite activity.Late November, early December, each year, Kanchanaburi celebrates its history with week-long celebrations centred on the infamous bridge. Nightly light & sound presentations record the forced labour construction of the notorious "Death Railway" which eventually linked Siam and Burma during1943.
